Profile Information

What achievements have you made in helping others?
- Established 3 Youth Drop In Centres
- Raised over a million dollars in funding for social justice programs
- Increased the effectiveness of dozens of social justice organizations in Asia, South America, North America, Africa and the South Pacific
- Mobilized almost 8000 new volunteers into long-term opportunities to serve others.
What do you consider to be important traits in helping others?
Probably the most important trait is to believe in your own personal benefit in doing something for someone else. Forget altruism. What we do needs to be fiercely connected to our own self-interest. Otherwise its just charity.
What do you consider to be today's greatest issue that is in need of attention?
The inter-connectedness of the issues, and our tendency to believe in a single-issue approach. 'Silver bullet' solutions have never worked.
Tell us about yourself...
I am a speaker/consultant/writer on the topic of Corporate Social Responsibility with a particular focus on Employee Volunteer Programs. I have spent the last 18 years working in and with NPO's utilizing a model that elevates volunteerism from a task-oriented experience to a transformative experience. The model is simple to understand and implement. It increases volunteer participation and retention exponentially. The most fascinating outcome is that those volunteers become more invigorated and productive in their respective places of employment.
Favorite book, author, quote...
The past is our definition. We may strive, with good reason, to escape it, or to escape what is bad in it, but we will escape it only by adding something better to it.
