Lets talk about funding for the daycare at this point. There are a number of avenues to obtain funding.
a) If either you or your partner is a minority, veteran, or woman, there are special grants/loans available. First become a certified diveristy business, for example - if woman owned, contact Woman Business Owned Enterprise National Council. They can guide you on how to get started and how to develop your business.
http://www.wbenc.org/GetCertified/ I believe they can also certify your business.

There are other advantages to becoming diversity certfied or otherwise known as MBE, W BE, VBE. Large corporations are required to have a certain percentage of their spend with diverse suppliers in order to get government contracts. You might be able to get additional business with a large corporation because they need diversity spend.
b) If Non-Profit Corporation. Keep in mind that non-profit's startup requirements might vary, depending on the specific type of business, and where your business is located.

Decide on a business name for your non-profit corporation. Some states require that your non-profit corporation's name include an identifying word such as "incorporated," "limited," "corporation,"

Register your non-profit's name, search the web on how to do this for your state.
Decide where to incorporate your non-profit.
Choose directors for your non-profit corporation.
Create Articles of Incorporation.
File non-profit corporation's Articles of Incorporation with your state's Secretary of State. Call them ahead of time, they may have guidance on how to create a non-profit.
You'll also need to write By-Laws and apply for tax-exempt status from the federal and state government. Go to www.IRS.gov to see if they can be of help.

Obtain business licenses and permits for your corporation and open a separate bank account for your non-profit. Keep checking, credit cards, debit cards for the non-profit by themselves, do not mix personal and non-profit statements.

This is not an all inclusive list and always check with your local, state, and fed government to ensure you covered all your basis.

As you get closer to starting the day care and after you contacted some of the groups above, drop me a note, perhaps I could be of further assistance.

David
